About Us

About Sunset Tribe

We’re two dads—Johan and Theo—lifelong mates with a shared love for adventure and the African bush. Our story started back in 1996, in Standard 6, when we met at school and quickly became inseparable. A year later, we did our first trip together to Johan’s dad’s game farm in the Waterberg. We were just 15—but the fire for exploration had already been lit.

High school was all about rugby and bikes, and as the years rolled on, the bikes got bigger and the adventures bolder. In our twenties, we roamed the Mpumalanga mountains and took on overland trips across Southern Africa. Somewhere between the dirt roads and campfires, we realised: Africa isn’t just a place you visit—it gets into your blood.

Like the saying goes, "Of everything that bites in Africa, the safari bug is the worst." And we were properly bitten.

From a cold beer at a bar on the Chobe River, to fighting a tigerfish on the Zambezi, to sleeping under a camelthorn in the Kalahari—we were hooked.

Then Life Happened

And then, like for many, the MMC years hit—Marriage, Mortgage, and Children. If you’re in it, you know. About 15 years vanished in the blink of an eye.

In 2018, we launched a business together making organic plant nutrition. Just as we found our feet, COVID rolled in and tested everything we had. When the dust settled, we looked back and realised—somewhere along the way, we’d stopped adventuring.

Turning 40 has a way of changing your perspective. The kids can finally wipe their own bums, the bills don’t bite as hard, and you stop caring what people think. It’s the perfect time to do what truly matters.

So What Is the Sunset Tribe?

We’ve both got amazing wives who (thankfully) understand our need to escape into the wild now and then. Johan has a full-on clan—three girls, two boys—and Theo has a pigeon pair. We’re both based in Pretoria, watching a generation grow up in a world of instant gratification and shallow priorities. It's wild out there—and not in a good way.

Sunset Tribe is our way of pushing back.

It’s a movement for those who want more than malls, meetings, and manicured lawns. It’s for families and friends who want to get out—really out—and experience the real Africa.

We believe in:

  • Experiences over possessions
  • Memories over perfection
  • Adventure over comfort
  • People over things
  • Relationships over money
  • Bread over salad
  • The present over the future
  • …And yes, we love beer.

You don’t need a million-rand Land Cruiser and a luxury caravan to enjoy Africa. Sure, it’s comfy—but it’s not necessary. Some of the best trips we’ve ever done were with light gear, minimal budgets, and a willingness to rough it.

Ride a scooter, a 150cc post bike, or a fully kitted GS. Drive a Golfie, a Corsa, or whatever gets you there. What matters is that you go.

The true adventure isn’t in your lounge or your estate. It’s out there, in the vastness of Africa—waiting.

So join us.
